  • I’m a Statistician

I came across an interesting article about modern day statisticians.  Instead of it just being a stereotyped activity it is on the forefront of industry; especially web-based industries like Google.

  • What to Choose?

Today there was a great posting on The Choice about what factors to look at when choosing a university.  The crux of the argument is that we as a society are drawn to instituitions with name recognization over other, possibly better, options.  Or at least options that are better for the particular individual involved.

Over the last two weeks at the MINDSET workshop I was able to work with many competent mathematics educators from the region.  The story of how and why people become educators is often quite interesting.  One teacher from the workshop, Bestos Fongoh, has one of the most interesting stories I know.

He is an Prince in his native country of Cameroon.  Through the influence of his mother and his friends he chose life as an educator and has landed at Hopewell High School in Charlotte, NC.

I’m glad to know that people like Bestos are making the choices to work as an educator.

New Math is a blog by Craig Damrauer.  Here he uses mathematical notation to define terms.  Here’s a recent favorite:

Last week and this I’ve been learning several new concepts to teach in my Discrete Math course this year at Covenant Day.  I’ve been at UNCC learning how to teach Operations Research to high school students.

My excitement for the upcoming year is growing!

  • Writing a College Essay

The Choice today has a great post on helping students write college essays.

Some thoughts I had as reading…the dean in the interview mentions that it’s obvious when an 18 year old is writing in a 40 year old’s voice.  The dean’s response is for senior’s in high school to write as senior’s.

Another thought is that student’s have time to think about their essay and produce one that is noticible (in a good way).

In fact, both of these seem like great things for students to be doing when they write in my class.  Hmmm…
